Magento to Shopify Plus migrations fail SEO in the same place every time: the team treats redirects as a launch week chore instead of an engineering deliverable. Here is the sequence we run, and the failure modes it prevents.
Inventory before you build anything
Crawl the live store and collect every URL with any indexation signal: ranking keywords, backlinks, traffic in the last year. That is your redirect inventory, typically two to five times larger than the sitemap suggests once you include parameter URLs, filtered collections and old campaign pages.
For Magento specifically, budget time for the parameter heavy URLs: filters, sorts and layered navigation variants that accumulate indexation like barnacles. Each one gets a decision: 301 to the clean equivalent, or consolidated via canonical, never left to 404.
Map every URL to exactly one destination
The redirect map is a deliverable with a review cycle. Old product URL to new product URL. Old category to the closest new collection. Discontinued products to their parent collection, not the homepage, because a 301 is a relevance statement and the homepage is irrelevant.
Ship the map as part of the build, tested in staging, with a rule that nothing 404s that had traffic. The launch checklist includes running the crawl again post launch and diffing the results.
Preserve what the crawler reads
Metadata, canonicals and structured data are implemented on the new templates before migration rehearsal, not retrofitted. Product schema, review markup and breadcrumb schema all have Shopify native or app supported equivalents. Verify them in the rich results tester while still on staging.
Content parity matters more than pixel parity. If the old product page carried 600 words of unique description and specification tables, that content migrates. Template changes that quietly drop content are the second most common SEO loss after redirects.
Watch indexation for 60 days
After cutover, Search Console becomes a daily instrument: coverage errors, position changes on money keywords, crawl stats. Drift gets fixed inside the contract window. Our benchmark across recent replatforms is zero net loss of organic sessions at the 60 day mark: verify the current sample before quoting it.
The launch week sequence
- Freeze content changes on the old store
- Run the final migration rehearsal with a timing log
- Cut over DNS inside the agreed window with the rollback plan staged
- Enable the 301 map and verify the top 100 URLs by traffic
- Submit the new sitemap, watch Search Console, fix drift daily
Boring, rehearsed, reversible. That is the entire trick: SEO survival is a checklist executed by engineers, not a ritual performed at midnight.
